Soul Makeover Tips

Soul Makeover

Here are my tips to get you on the Godly road today. And the great news is that they transcend all Christian belief systems. It doesn’t matter if you’re Catholic or Protestant. If you believe in God, you’ve landed on the right post.

Soul Makeover Tip Number 1: Daily Prayer

There are so many foolproof options. Don’t overthink it. Just do it.

I start my day with the Divine Mercy Chaplet on my way to work. It’s a singing prayer. Then, I end each day, or try to at least, with the Rosary. I feel like praying to God are the great “bookends” to my day. What could possibly go wrong in between when I start and end my daily adulting with prayer.

So what constitutes as prayer? Am I saying there has to be a string of beads involved? Absolutely not. Any conversation between you and God constitutes as prayer. And, it can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as 30.

There are so many options. For example, you can pull from the Holy Bible. You can say a Rosary. It can be simple personal expression of thought. This is your time to connect with Him. Any thing goes!

And how to begin? What to say? This is meant to be a stress-less conversation between you and our Heavenly Father. I normally start with the sign of the cross. And today I wished Him a wonderful day, thanked him for my blessed life! That’s how I feel closer to God.

It really is just that simple. Why do we always feel so tempted to complicate something meant to be organic, natural. Prayer equals talking to God.

Soul Makeover Tip Number 2: Music

There comes a time in life when you have to ask yourself: what am I listening to? Is this getting me closer to God?

And yes, it’s that deep. But, no, I’m not saying you can’t listen to those riveting controversial artists out there. I’m just saying that your music preferences do feed into what you process internally.

The old adage “you are what you eat” translates well here. Our thoughts shape who we are. And the inherent danger is to become desensitized to otherwise objectionable information lingering out there disguised as music.

My favorite music is still anything from the 80s, 90s. But, truth be told I am a geeky fan of christian and country music. I can’t even believe I’m saying that! If you only knew the old Grace. Check out my Country Hell Yeah!! and He’s Not Dead playlists on Spotify and tell me what you think.

So, have I stopped listening to “risqué” rap? Wink – no. It’s all over my running play list on Spotify. Do I listen to it daily? Nope. But, I have found some compelling Christian singers that turn it up and sound just like mainstream rap, minus the obscenities. Makes you feel closer to God just listening! And country music is not all Johhny Cash and Urban Cowboy. LOL.

But, don’t take my word for it. Check out TobyMac’s “Speak Life” or Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to Be” (featuring Florida Georgia Line) or GAWVI (feat. Lecrae in “Fight for Me” … I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. This music

Moreover, music fuels my soul, energizes my day and I want to keep it all upbeat. And to be honest, I was born in the late 60s – don’t call me out of my name, it’s not cool. B*tch is not an acceptable term to this mom girl boss.

Soul Makeover Tip Number 3: Movies/TV

Yep, you knew this was coming. But, you’re probably wondering how this affects us getting closer to God?

What you are “listening to” goes hand in hand with “what you are watching”. When I say that as a society we have become completely blind to what used to be shocking, I’m not kidding. We have become nonreactive to otherwise sensitizing agents: violence, language, nudity, sexual content.

I still remember that 80s moment on Dynasty when Krystle Carrington slaps Alexis Carrington Colby and calls her a b*tch… or was it the other way around? All of America gasped simultaneously! That had never happened on prime time television before.

Fast forward to today and you’re shrugging your shoulders. What’s the big deal, you ask. Well, that is you becoming desensitized, immune to what used to be offensive. Where does it end? What’s next c*nt? You laugh now…

I’m just saying – be picky about what you expose your mind to. Similarly, it’s okay to stand up and say “that popular show XYZ” goes against everything I stand for as a Christian. Be the voice for those around you trying to get closer to God and probably thinking the same thing.

Pro tip: Did you know that there is a Christian equivalent to Netflix? It’s called Pureflix, a streaming company offering faith-based movies to watch. Their creators actually boast to have been inspired by Netflix. Fun fact: Pureflix is “known for producing Christian films such as God’s Not Dead, Do You Believe?, I’m Not Ashamed, and The Case for Christ.” There’s even Pureflix in Spanish! Click here and check it out.

Sorry, “American Horror Story” I’m breaking up with you. In this case, it’s not you. It’s me. I’m trying to stay closer to God.
